What is language?

Pedagogy of Langauge development  




*language is a medium through which one can express his ideas, thoughts ,feelings and messages. Different languages are spoken in the world. How these languages oriented, it is very difficult to know. It is believed that people started conveying message through,signals ,postures, gestures etc. 


*Every language chooses some symbol from the alphabet of the language and joins in different combinations to form meaningful words. Language conventions are not easily changed. Language is extendable and Modifiable. Language is the method of human communication. 


*The teaching of language is basically conditioned by the nature of the subject. Language is the manipulation of experiences by the use of symbols. The concept of language as a learning task is a complex of interrelated and interdependent experiences and elements, in which growth proceeds stimultaneously but in varying degree, dependent on points or emphasis and interest.


Few characteristics of language are given below

1.Language is a very important means of communication.
2. language is a unique system .
3.language is a carrier of Civilization and culture .
4.language is a form of social behaviour. 
5. language as a medium of instruction.

functions of language

Halliday (1975) identifies seven functions that language has for children in their early years .Childrens are motivated to acquire language because it serves certain purposes or function for them. The first four functions help the child to satisfy physical emotional and social needs. Halliday calls them instrumental, regulatory ,interactional and personal functions. 


1.Instrumental there is when the child uses language to express their needs. 

2.Regulatory this is where language is used to tell others what to do. 

3.Interactional here language is used to make contact with others and form relationship .

4.Personal this is the use of language to express feelings opinion and individual identity.
